Most accounts online tell us much the same story. iPhone 11 is a hit. iPhone 11 Pro’s three-camera array is about as good as it gets in the computational photography arena. What is not to like? New colors, better photos and videos, slofies (slow motion selfies), even a surprisingly attractive entry-level price tag for iPhone 11.
Then along came Google and the much-anticipated Pixel 4, the one that leaked all the goodies before it hit the streets. Guess what? Pixel 4 has what iPhone does not. You just need to dig into the details to see the differences.
There are many ways to compare flagship products. Think Mustang vs. Corvette. Or, Tesla vs. Nissan Leaf. Or, anything Samsung to anything Apple. Yes, the listed items change regularly so this time it’s going to be what Pixel 4 has that iPhone 11 does not.
6GB RAM – Yes, RAM matters. Except for iPhone customers. Apple seldom uses the same amount of RAM in iPhone as Samsung uses; Android seems to require plenty of RAM just to scroll smoothly, and more RAM uses more battery, so maybe Apple’s approach– 4GB RAM on iPhone 11 Pro vs. 6GB RAM on Pixel 4 is a better deal for customers. But, Google wins bragging rights, not performance rights.
Back Swipe – Android smartphones have the back swipe and back gesture. iPhone customers sometimes have to think about where it is (bar across the bottom of each app). It’s not a big deal, but Apple keeps changing it.
Live Caption – this works with Pixel 4’s built-in real-time Recorder transcription engine. The difference here is that it adds captions to any video you stream. Live. Real-time. That’s cool.
Recorder – both iPhone 11 and Pixel 4 have audio recorder capability, including the option to record audio and transcribe into text. Pixel 4’s Recorder does the transcription in real time– no internet connection required. Also cool.
Crash Detection – think of Apple Watch’s ability to detect a fall, then park the capability into the smartphone for car crashes. Wreck your car and the Pixel 4 phones home to give your location. All while you’re knocked out inside your crumpled up car. Sweet.
Forehead – criticise Apple all you want for the Notch, but instead of a cool looking Notch, Pixel 4 comes with a humongous forehead, not to mention some fat-assed bezels. Just wrong.
Just so you don’t feel bad about your iPhone purchase, remember that iPhone 11 Pro models take better photos, have better night capture, better video recording, and longer batter life.
