Apple made it easy to determine which iPhone to buy. Last year. iPhone XR had a nice big display, good battery life, a variety of non-pro colors, a fast CPU, and one camera. If you wanted another camera then you had to upgrade– for $250 more– to the somewhat more-pro iPhone XS and XS Max.
This year iPhone 11 has dual cameras, themselves an improvement on last year’s model, but for less money. Go with the 64GB version and your price this year is a mere $699. What do you get with iPhone 11 Pro? An extra camera for $999. Which of the two iPhone 11 models do you expect to be the big seller?
Yes, iPhone 11 Pro has a more professional camera array– shooting three photos or videos at the same time with be a big hit– but the differences between displays, to the average person who does not know an LCD from an OLED, will be nominal.
iPhone displays have been ‘virtually indistinguishable from perfect’ for years; so say the folks to test such things. iPhone 11 is a bit bigger than iPhone ll Pro, but smaller than iPhone 11 Pro Max. All three have better battery life than the 2018 models, and since battery life varies person-to-person, the differences are a non-issue.
These choices are crazy from the standpoint of price, but not so crazy if you want better photos and videos, and not so crazy if you need those better photos and videos on a much bigger and better display.
See how that works?
Most iPhone customers can get by just fine with 128GB of SSD storage on iPhone 11, but that bumps the price tag up $100 to $749. The bump from 64GB to the next level, 256GB of storage, on iPhone 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max also bumps up the price to $1,149 and $1,249, respectively; which also means the larger Max display is worth $100 more.
Here’s how I see it. Apple’s pricing strategy is crafty.
If you want more, guess what? You’ll pay more.
If you don’t want to pay more, you won’t get much less with iPhone 11.
That may sound crazy but it’s exactly how Apple wants it to be. Choices may seem a bit crazy but it depends upon from which perspective you inspect iPhone ll’s feature list and price tag.
