Apple is known to release new products around the end of summer to early autumn, just in time for the holiday shopping season. With new products on the way should you buy anything from Apple?
No. Well, yes. Maybe. It depends. If there is anything that 15 years of writing for Mac360 taught me, it’s to take a stand. In this case, the real answer to the question is obvious.
Let’s say you lost your iPhone. New models won’t show up in any kind of availability for perhaps a month. Can you wait that long? If so, wait. If not, you need a new iPhone now. Chance Miller asked a similar question:
Are the iPhone XS and iPhone XR worth buying right now?
That’s because iPhone XS and XR are likely to disappear while replaced by iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro models. The answer to the question is the same.
It depends. Or, does it?
Even if you don’t care about the new tech coming in that year’s new iPhone, the answer is always clear: wait.
Wrong answer. The correct answer is, especially if you cannot wait, is, “It depends.”
If you have a requirement for the latest and greatest, no matter what it is or what it costs, wait. If you need a better iPhone camera, then wait.
See how that works? The proper answer is, “It depends.”
Use case scenarios vary person to person and if you cannot wait for a month or two for a new iPhone to be available, your life will not fall into tattered disrepair with an iPhone XR or iPhone XS that you plan to keep for about three years.
Wait. Doesn’t Apple always put one of last year’s model on sale at a lower price when the new models hit the streets? Yes.
It’s unknown which of the 2018 iPhone models Apple will continue to sell following the iPhone 11 release, but at least one of them will likely stick around at a lower price point. Furthermore, retailers will be looking to clear stock of older iPhone models leading into the holiday shopping season.
I know which iPhone model will stick around and show up at the lower price point.
Or, maybe all three models. That means you could save hundreds just by waiting a couple of months, but the problem still exists as is if you need a new iPhone now.
Even if you wait a few months and still end up buying last year’s iPhone XS instead of the shiny new iPhone 11, you’ll be glad you did. The iPhone XS and iPhone XR are excellent devices, but you’ll regret paying full retail for them without waiting a few weeks to see what sort of price drops are in store.
The key here is the same as when we started this pleasant little screed. If you can wait, wait. If you cannot wait, buy now.
In three years which one of the two you own won’t matter much anyway because Apple will have three new models which make whichever one you bought still look old; has-been like.
You can apply the same sentiment to any major Apple product; Mac, iPad, Watch, AirPods, etc. The only problem is those products do not arrive with the same degree of surety as iPhones.
Still, no matter what, it depends.
